In biomechanics, we study the physics behind human movement. This includes movement analysis - something most coaches do intuitively, but biomechanists try to put number values on everything they see. By improving our understanding of elite performance, we can help more people get closer to it.

Another aspect of biomechanics is product design and development - an important area, as long as companies continue to provide funding! Here, we try to make that perfect shoe, swim-suit, racquet or safety equipment.

Some of the research going on at McGill's biomechanics lab is trying to improve hockey helmets. Somehow I don't know if we'll see this new extreme sport any time soon... but you never know!
